Luminescence dating is an important tool for studying the Quaternary. Classical luminescence dating dates when a grain of sand was last exposed to sunlight and subsequently buried, enabling researchers to address many questions in areas of Earth and environmental sciences as well as archaeology. Additionally, the versatility of the luminescence signal allows for novel questions to be addressed – from soil mixing rates to geological uplift rates to sediment provinancing to dating of geological and archaeological rock surfaces.
This course will provide an introduction to the principles and potential applications and limitations of optical dating. The many potential applications of luminescence methods will be discussed through case studies. Practical insights into OSL sampling in field contexts, sample preparation and environmental dose rate determination will be provided. After the course, the student will understand the principles, limitations, and potential applications of luminescence dating, be capable of critically assessing method-based scientific papers and has basic knowledge about correct OSL sampling in geological and archaeological contexts.

Pangeo-DEUQUA 2024
23 to 27 September 2024, Salzburg Austria
Dear colleagues,
Welcome to the PANGEO scientific meeting co-hosted by DEUQUA!
The conference will take place on September 23rd to 27th, 2024 in Salzburg, Austria. It will be held at the Department Environment and Biodiversity of the Paris Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS), Hellbrunner Str. 34, 5020 Salzburg. Under the heading “Converging Spheres” this conference provides a platform for presenting research carried out at universities, organizations, and companies.
Like the PANGEO meeting, the German Quaternary Association (DEUQUA) meeting is held every second year. DEUQUA is the main Quaternary research society for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and its meetings are held across various sites of these three countries. Focusing on the Quaternary period, the DEUQUA offers a broad forum on related topics including earth surface processes and climate change.
The idea of this meeting is to stimulate interaction between experts from different geoscientific disciplines. Our motto "Converging Spheres" should not only refer to the scientific content but also to the geoscientific community. Apart from classic lecture sessions, the scientific program comprises six workshops, each covering a broad geoscientific range intended to address all aspects of applied and basic geoscience research. Each workshop topic is associated with a keynote/impulse lecture presented to the plenary on Tue, 24th. Workshops on each topic will then be moderated by the convenors on Wed, 25th. Contributions will comprise posters and short presentations but can be organized flexible by convenors, ideally giving much room for discussion.
An extensive excursion program and pre-conference workshops will frame the conference program (in progress). For further information please visit our website www.pangeo-deuqua2024.at, where we will host further information and news including registration fees. Conference language: English and German.
We look forward to welcoming you in Salzburg!
The Scientific and Organizing Committee of PANGEO / DEUQUA 2024

06 – 10 April 2024 – Galera, Andalusia, Spain
Registration deadline 30.11.2023
We are pleased to invite you to take part in the international symposium that will be held in Galera, a small town in the northeast of the newly established UNESCO Granada Geopark. All
participants are welcome to present their recent studies in oral or poster presentation. Furthermore we are looking forward to having interesting discussions and exchange of new ideas during the
symposium and during fieldtrips. This symposium is being held as part of a larger research project funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation). The conference will last 5 days starting with
two days of oral and poster presentations and three final days of field trips. During these field trips, we will discover numerous stunning sites within the Guadix-Baza Basin. This basin is
famous for the first finds of Hominids in Europe and provides an unprecedented density of Plio-Pleistocene vertebrate fauna. An extensive repertory of natural archives offers insights into
Quaternary river erosion forming spectacular fragmented sceneries.
We asked for financial support at the INQUA Commission on Stratigraphy and Chronology (SACCOM) to make assistance for ECS (early career scientists) possible. Interested ECS please announce their
intention to participate asap, as the deadline for financial support will expire end of September.
Travel to Galera and Accommodation:
Please organize your travel to Galera and accommodation by your own. After successful registration, we will announce appropriate accommodation options and assist you in finding suitable
accommodation.
For any questions please contact: daniel_wolf@tu-dresden.de
Registration fees: 250 Euro/Person (Full-paying), 200 Euro (ECS, PhD-students)
This includes:
Optionally, we offer a conference dinner with a flamenco performance for 35 Euro per person.
We are sorry that we have to limit the number of participants, as the excursions can only be carried out with special vehicles. The scientific program will start in the morning of Saturday, 6th
of April 2024 in the Conference Hall of the Galera Hotel.
Please hand in an abstract by email and send it to ramona.winter@tu-dresden.de
The abstract could include a meaningful figure, however should not exceed one page. Please note that time for oral presentations (20 Minutes) is limited and that the organizing committee will
decide about the program flow. We welcome contributions (oral or posters) of ECS (early career scientists) and young researchers in particular. Please send us the title and the abstract of your
presentation by end of November.
